There is a logical expectation that all professional teachers will have undertaken the necessary teacher training and be fully qualified to teach our children. They may have a degree or college diploma and as much as you can also benefit from a similar qualification, statistics show that a recognized qualification is not necessary to engage in home tuition.

As a parent, you already have a head start because…

You want the best for your child.

You know exactly how he or she prefers to learn.

You are totally committed.

You are eager to help them succeed.

You can provide a one-on-one learning experience.

Home tuition is growing in popularity and may be the preferred choice for parents and their children. However, for those parents who are not professional teachers, you need to understand the importance of selecting the right curriculum for your child.

Whenever you have a definite objective or goal you wish to accomplish, the best way to help you achieve that goal is to develop a plan and adhere to it. For example, part of that plan should be to minimize distractions on the days when home tuition is the priority. Also take into account your child’s learning style, what resources you will need and your child’s actual capacity to learn from the point of how much time you will need to dedicate on each day, for each lesson.

Read the following guidelines which will help you and your child to get the most out of your decision to teach him or her at home.

Make sure you fully understand the curriculum you are about follow. Also, check it is a good match for your child and it matches the goals of either the state within which you live or your country of residence.

Educate yourself to educate your child. Read through and study the curriculum before you begin to teach your child.

Using that study and your knowledge of your child’s preferred learning style, prepare your home tuition plan. Take into account how many hours, how many days, the equipment and the resources you will need.

Use this planning time to also work out how you will minimize disruptions and distractions.

One of the huge benefits of home teaching is that your child will be more relaxed, more willing to participate and engage in a two-way discussion – as long as you create the environment which will allow that to happen. Children love to express themselves, make sure you allow that to happen.

There will be times when frustration sets in. Your child is unlikely to be an expert in every subject. You may get frustrated (hopefully never annoyed) that he or she has not grasped something that may think is straightforward. Find out what the root cause of the problem is in an understanding way and work out a plan together to resolve it.

Your child may get frustrated, even bored, and will want to do something else. Use your judgment to decide what to in this situation. He or she may expect the environment to be far more relaxed because you are teaching them at home instead of sending them to school. Discipline is not a nasty word. Proper discipline will be needed if you wish you and your child to succeed.

As parents we want what is best for our children and we want them to do the best they can. Home tuition is an effective way for both you and your child to succeed. The tips and techniques discussed above will help you to achieve your teaching goals.
