Ways to Ace Examination
The word “examinations” usually scares most students away. Twice a year, students in Singapore sit for major examinations, once in June and the other in November. Anxious parents would be eager to find out ways to help their child in scoring better grades in school.
Firstly, a student must learn how to study effectively. To start off, when the teacher begins teaching a new chapter, there are usually headings, introductory and summary paragraphs. These are areas that could give the student a quick review of the topic that they are going to learn about. During the class discussions, it is vital to raise any questions or queries that you face while revising the topics. Consistent reading and follow up on the topics allows one to have a better understanding of the topic taught in class. Following that, close the book and recite the concepts or main points helps in remembering difficult theories. Lastly, reviewing pass year questions assists in daily revision and in turn gains more confidence in handling different exam questions.
Secondly, time management and diligence are essential for attaining better grades in school. Right from the start of the new school semester, students should have a time table to allocate sufficient time for revision. Daily practises should be done diligently as knowledge is accumulated over time and practise makes perfect. For many students, last min preparation for examinations add more pressure and they tend to have more difficulty absorbing more information. Instead of rushing to complete last minute revision, time management helps students to better prepare themselves for the final examination.
In addition, having the right study attitude is also important. For example, many students like to keep their least favourite subject to the last to do revision. Avoiding revising a difficult subject is incorrect as this would cause the student to lose interest in the subject as time goes by. Having the right mindset means that the student seeks help early from teachers or private tutors to help him better cope or grasp the concepts of the topics that he has problem understanding. Asking questions and clarifying doubts with teachers is one of the best ways in learning and obtaining better grades in school. This is because in a class of 40 students, it is very difficult for the teacher to know what are the questions that individual student faces while revising their school homework.
Lastly, how well a student performs at the examination depends on how prepared he is and this will be reflected in his self confidence when he enters the examination hall. Being self confidence means that even though you are feeling nervous, you know that you are well prepared and this is well assuring. On receiving the examination paper, calmly look through it and set priorities and manage your time well. This means answering the questions you know best first before handling the difficult ones so that more time can be spent figuring out the best answers for questions that you have least confidence in. A well strategized method of handling the questions goes a long way in producing better results.
